Kosovo should celebrate in a dignified and peaceful way its independence, and its minority communities need to be protected, says the Islamic Community of Kosovo, ICK.
In a press release issued on Friday, the chief Mufti, Naim Ternava, congratulates the people of Kosovo, and urges them to be calm and to respect each other during the celebrations.
“It would be better if everyone, including the minorities were to celebrate,” the ICK statement says, adding that “this is a historic moment to be shared by everyone”.
Kosovo’s Serb minority, who make up about 5% of the population, are opposed to independence from Serbia, which is expected to be declared on Sunday.
“There was a lot of blood and tears, and a great deal of effort to ensure this day comes,” but it notes that “the day has finally arrived”.
The ICK also thanks all allies and friends who supported the independence of the UN-administered territory by stating that “thanks to Allah, the support of our friends was there”.
The statement goes on to declare that “an independent, sovereign Kosovo, integrated in the great European family and NATO would be a better future for everyone.
“The Albanian community must extend the support and protection to the Serb community in
Kosovo, because that way we will demonstrate the highest values of our civilisation.”
